Northwestern’s Data Science Program Ranked Fourth In Nation

WINSTED, CT – CT State Community College Northwestern is proud to announce their Data Science Associate Degree program has been ranked fourth in the country by TechGuide, a product of Tri-Town Media.

The Technology Studies Data Science program is offered at five CT State community college campuses and was first offered at Northwestern in Fall 2019 as both an associate degree and certificate option. Data Science training is widely used in all fields and provides students with the knowledge in mathematics, science, data literacy, programming, and general education needed for this high-demand field, where the focus is on critical thinking to analyze and resolve technology problems.

Math professor, Crystal Wiggins initiated the program at Northwestern and is proud of the popularity it has gained. “I wanted to offer students an applied STEM degree that does not need the entire calculus track and was rooted in statistics,” she said. “This program is project-based so students are learning real world solutions to real world problems and have gained applied skills, not just learning based in theory.”

Although the associate degree enables a high level of proficiency for entry level career options, many students choose to continue their education to obtain a higher degree in the field. The one-year to eighteen-month certificate option sees a wide range of students including those who are already working and want to change careers, and even those students majoring in another field. “Students majoring in other fields like computer science, political science, biology, and business who are interested in handling data within their specific field see the value in gaining more knowledge in data science,” said Wiggins. “It really is beneficial to all fields in this contemporary job market.”
