Connecticut State Northwestern Announces STEM Scholars

Winsted – Eighteen students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs at CT State Northwestern have been named as this year’s STEM Scholars. The scholars were selected based on their academic potential and STEM career aspirations. Each scholar receives a scholarship between $3,000 and $6,000 per year based on their enrollment status and will meet weekly with faculty mentors and participate in enrichment activities. The STEM Scholars program is supported by a $750,000 S-STEM Grant from the National Science Foundation.

This year’s continuing scholars are:

Devon Binette: Devon is a sophomore studying Computer Programming, He previously worked as a project manager for a company that produced cranial and facial implants but is now pursuing his degree full-time.

Pierce Campbell: Pierce is a sophomore enrolled in the Natural Resources Program. He spent the summer working for the Department of Energy and the Environment (DEEP). Last spring he participated in a study abroad trip to Spain.

Rebecca Giarnese: Rebecca is working toward a degree in Data Science and holds an associates degree in Natural Resources. She has completed internships at Great Mountain Forest and at the White Memorial Conservation Center. This past summer she studied Sustainable Development at the University of Lille in France.

Emma Hardee: Emma is a sophomore studying Natural Resources. She will be working as an intern at the Peoples State Forest this fall.

Nathan Hudson: Nathan is a sophomore and is enrolled in the Physics Transfer program. He recently completed a study abroad trip to Spain.

Kimberly Finkle: Kimberly is a sophomore enrolled in the Natural Resources Program. She recently completed an internship at the Audubon Center.

Owen Marvin: Owen is a sophomore and is studying Engineering Science. He currently works as a technician in the automotive industry.

Tristan Prior: Tristan is a freshman studying Computer Science.

This year’s new scholars are:

Tiffany Arenas, Donald Capuano, Thomas Donofri, Zachary Gioia, Trinity Korte Binette, Eudokia Nalitov, and Alaja Nelms, enrolled in the Computer Information Systems Program; Owen Clark enrolled in the Math Transfer program; Jada Barger and Leah Bowman enrolled in the Sustainability and Natural Resources programs.

Serving as STEM faculty mentors are Sharon Gusky, Professor of Biology, John Jagtiani, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Business Intelligence, Douglas Mooney, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics, Alice Vossbrink, Associate Professor of Natural Resources, and Crystal Wiggins, STEM Department Chair and Professor of Math and Data Science.
