WINSTED, CT – May 20, 2019 – Northwestern Connecticut Community College’s 53rd Commencement will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at the Warner Theatre, 68 Main Street, Torrington, CT. The Commencement Ceremony will begin at 6:30 pm, with President Michael Rooke, Ph.D., presiding.
The Commencement Address will be delivered by Kevin Noblet, who lives in Barkhamsted, CT, and spent more than 40 years in journalism. A native of Stamford, he started writing for newspapers in Connecticut and eventually joined the staff of The Associated Press (AP), where he worked as a reporter and editor for 27 years. As an overseas correspondent he covered news from Latin America and the Caribbean for a decade, then came back to AP’s New York headquarters to help direct all of its international news coverage. AP won two Pulitzer prizes for stories from overseas during that period. He later ran global business and financial news for the AP, and wrapped up his professional career with seven years at Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal.
He is a graduate of Concordia College in Bronxville, New York, and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He taught international reporting as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and also was Scripps-Howard Visiting Professional at Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. He now teaches a news literacy course here at Northwestern Connecticut Community College, helping students apply critical thinking skills to consumption of news in the digital age.
