Oxford Consortium for Human Rights
Introduction Video
General Information
In partnership with the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights, CTState is offering opportunities to any CTState Community College student to travel to Oxford University to attend human rights conferences. While in Oxford, students engage in lectures presented by world renowned professors and experts, stay in Oxford dorms, and get to explore Oxford!
This year, we are sending a total of 12-16 students to the two workshops. The workshops are as follows:
Human Rights in Climate Emergency and War: March 18th-24th
Human Rights and New Technology: July 1st-7th For more information about the workshops and the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights click here.
Students interested in traveling to Oxford are highly encouraged to attend the Community Action Summit hosted at Quinnipiac University on October 13th, 2023 to meet some of the Oxford professors, learn more about the program, and see some projects that current students are working on. In order to be eligible you must be a current CTState Community College student in good academic standing.
We typically send anywhere between 6-8 students to each workshop.
Yes – faculty can attend the workshops. For each workshop there are no more than 2 faculty members that attend.
Students are expected to register for a 3 credit HUM201: Special Topics in Humanities course at CTState- Northwestern. This course is covered by financial aid as an unrestricted elective OR a liberal arts elective.
Students and faculty travel to Oxford together. Students will meet at a central meeting spot, get transportation to JFK where we get direct flights to the UK. Students will stay in Oxford dorms for the entirety of the program.
Students will need some funding for dinners (breakfast and lunch are provided), and any souvenir money they might want.
Students are encouraged to talk about their interest in human rights work, their experience volunteering or working with both on campus and off campus groups, and their goals for attending the workshop. Students will also be required to get a faculty recommendation as part of the application.
Applicants will be contacted in mid-November if they are accepted into the program.
Students do not need a current passport to apply for the program, though it is highly encouraged that students start working on getting a passport as soon as possible if they would like to travel. Current wait times for passports are anywhere between 9-16 weeks. Students will be responsible for getting and paying for their passports.
